Weir on Wye

The weir shown here marks the approximate position of one of Bakewell's early crossing places on the Wye. Long before bridges were erected, travellers and traders who frequently forded rivers with horses, cattle and sheep, chose points where the waters were at their most shallow.

Pictured below is Bakewell's magnificent picturesque early thirteenth century bridge which spans the river Wye. This bridge marks the eastern entrance that carries the A619 into the Capital of the Peak District National Park, where during the early part of its history, it formed a much used Pack Horse way that led towards Sheffield and Chesterfield. To the west of Bakewell, this route went via the Old Portway and Haddon Fields towards Alport.

Around Water Lane, Water Street and Portland Square, there is a delightful range of small shops that hold a variety of wares to entice the visitor.

It is almost impossible to go thirsty in Bakewell, for the town has a large number of very attractive early Public Houses and Inns to help quench the thirst of the weary traveller.
