The Heart of a Peak District Community
Buxton Carnival - 15th July 2000
|
|
Buxton's millennium carnival was a tremendous success as
thousands flocked to enjoy the festivities. The weather remained fine
with the sun putting in an appearance every now and again.
|
|
The parade began with the carnival queens and their retinue,
accompanied by music from Fairfield and Burbage brass bands, with
support from the Derby Diamonds youth band.

For those of us who are familiar with the
humorous aspects of this annual event, the crowds were entertained by
the wonderful antics of Bill Weston's "Billerettes", who were linked in
with the St John band from Dronfield, to give us a hilarious sight that
will be hard to forget.
|
This special millennium carnival was made
a resounding success through the support of a variety of exciting
floats, including the image of Christmas, with Santa, snow and gifts
around the tree.
As well as all the usual sights and sounds of a carnival, the countryside offering from Chelmorton gave us a few smells too!!

A bed supported by various nurses
provided lots of laughter. This was presented by some of the staff of
the Royal Devonshire hospital although a stay in hospital was never
quite this bawdy to our recollection. Children played an important role
in the afternoon's proceedings, as many had gone to great lengths to
dress up in a variety of beautiful costumes.
