This independent web site was created primarily, for the greater promotion of, not only Buxton, a lovely spa town nestling within the Derbyshire Peak District hills and dales, but also, the many smaller picturesque towns and villages that together, make up this very special region. We are here to focus your attention and offer you vital information regarding all aspects of the Tourism, Leisure, Accommodation and the Amenities that are available to you, from within this fine bustling community.
Ever since the Romans first began to exploit the area for its mineral waters, Buxton and the Peak District have become the centre of attention for millions of visitors, each and every year. This very beautiful area, with its many varied and striking landscapes, has made it the number one Derbyshire tourist attraction. It's one that clearly has many special features and sources of entertainment and wonder, for the whole family, throughout the year.
Visitors come from far and wide to enjoy the annual Gilbert and Sullivan festival in the glorious surroundings of Buxton's wonderful Opera House. There is the highly popular annual Bakewell show, an event which highlights our large and very important rural community. Ancient customs also play an important role in most Peak District towns and villages during the summer, and the most widespread being the mystically beautiful floral tradition of Wells Dressing.
Today, tens of thousands of visitors come to sample Buxton spring water, which flows free at the St Anne's Well. Many more will travel to admire the magnificent local architecture, ( some of which dates from the early 17th century ), or take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Pavilion Gardens, visit the stores, shopping for the latest in fashions, or spend a week, or so, walking through the hills and dales, stopping long enough to admire the small, but quiet villages, where time appears to stand still in the tranquillity of this breathtaking of English landscapes.
These same landscapes are inspirational to the photographer, artist and poet alike. The ever changing scenery creates new vistas at every turn, sights where nature can be seen at its loveliest, and explored to the full. Everyone is guaranteed to find something special to interest them, even from among the many organised events, no matter the time of year.
Those, who choose to stay, will find a variety of the finest accommodation in Derbyshire's Peak District to satisfy their needs : quality hotels, guest houses, farmhouses, camping and caravanning. The area also boasts a number of comfortable Youth Hostels, available for those who enjoy the advantages of this more leisurely form of budget accommodation.
The Peak District affords much fine shopping, with many familiar high street names. They are centred around the towns of Buxton, Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock. These towns also have their colourful market days, places where it is possible to buy anything from fruit and vegetables, to clothes, antiques and other collectibles.
