This grand Edwardian Opera
House, a jewel in the crown of this part of the Derbyshire Peak
District, was designed by Frank Matcham and built at a cost of £25,000.
It was opened in 1903 with seating for 1250 people.
During its lifetime the Opera House
also housed a cinema, and this eventually gave way to it returning to
life as a theatre in 1979. As well as being the home of the Buxton
Opera Festival and the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival,
the Opera House presents an extensive
programme of events including comedy, ballet, music, opera and an
annual pantomime.
