The Heart of a Peak District Community
Pavilion Gardens and The Opera House
|
|
Buxton has many fascinating places of
interest for both the visitor and tourist. Beginning with the centre of
the
town, there is the Pavilion Gardens with its building complex that
consists of the Opera House, a grand building
with a rich and
stunningly decorated interior, it plays host to a variety of
entertainment productions.

Depending upon the time of the year, there are music festivals, operas,
plays, comedy performances, with pantomimes at Christmas.

Conservatory
Adjoining the Opera House, there is a fine Conservatory with a
beautiful display of flowering and non-flowering garden and tropical
plants the year round.
|
In the gardens, there is the newly erected Bandstand, a
memorial to Burbage Band Conductor, Don Redfern. Here, music is played
during the summer months to the delight of those sat along the
promenade, taking in the sunshine. Other entertaining activities take
place in the open air during the season. For those who would take some
refreshment, there is the Lounge/Restaurant with its balcony Coffee
Shop.

Early Tickets from the Gardens
Further along, we arrive at the Cafeteria and adjoining shops. Ahead,
the visitor will also see the grand domed Concert Hall, a building that
plays host to a variety of exhibitions and collectors fairs throughout
the year. There is also the Paxton Suite which is used for conferences
and events, including a demonstration of Well dressing during July.
|
Continuing on our journey, the gardens has its own indoor swimming pool
on the right, whilst to the left, there is a children's play area with
swings etc. At the time of writing, there is much restoration work
being carried out within the whole of the gardens.

|
It is not looking at its best just now, but there is
the promise that it will eventually return to its former beauty once
the work is completed.
Much further over to your left, and after a minute or so of walking,
you will reach the largest of the lakes. Its waters attract many birds,
including : Swan, Mallard, Heron, Coot, Black-headed Gulls, Moorhen and
Muscovy duck. There is seating around the lake for you to sit and enjoy
the scene.
