Fairfield was originally a village set apart from the town, where it
lay within the bounds of the ancient Forest of the Peak. The village
green was, and still is at its centre, forming a part of what is
locally known as the Common.
Today, the common, once used to graze sheep and cattle, is now occupied
by an eighteen hole golf course, the layout of which is seen as the
motorist approaches Buxton from the north, along the A6.

The Church of St Peter, built in 1839, stands on the site of a much
earlier ecclesiastical building. Fairfield contains some of the oldest
housing that still exists today, many dating from the early seventeenth
century, and are fine examples of the local architecture of that bygone
era.

Fairfield - New Houses
Fairfield has increased dramatically in size since WWII, with the
building of hundreds of both Council and Private dwellings. These reach
out almost as far as the Wye valley to the south. Today, Fairfield
forms one of the most highly populated areas within the town of Buxton.
