Although not the oldest part of Buxton,
Spring Gardens none-the-less consists of a mixture of the town's finest
early and post modern architecture. It was during 1998, that the
finishing touches were made to pedestrianize Spring Gardens, whereby
the Precinct Shopping Centre was added on the north side. Together they
form a fine bustling venue for shoppers and visitors alike. The town
boasts a large number of classic high street shops, popular names that
are normally associated with our much larger cities.
During the summer months, Spring Gardens becomes host to a number of
highly talented, and sometimes colourful street entertainers. Here, the
shopper and visitor are able to enjoy mime artists, jugglers and
buskers, or to simply stand and listen to the delights of a variety of
classical and modern musicians, an opportunity which greatly adds to
the overall Buxton experience.
For approximately an hour or so, during the month of July, the shops
momentarily close on Spring Gardens, while the town's carnival passes
through on its circuitous route around the town, crossing the market
place to finally disperse close to the Crescent.
