In the outer reaches of the alpha quadrant, an alien fleet encounters an old
Klingon science vessel and eradicates it without any remorse.
Within the Alien Fleet, Commander Grratar executes the officer who led to the
untimely destruction of the Klingon vessel. It is among their customs to take
advantage of the technology used by other civilisation, and he doesn't like
to be cheated.
Meanwhile despite Grratar's best attempts at destroying it, the MRT'lag probe
continues its exploration of the fleet, gathering as much data as it can hold
in its databanks.
Day 1
The news of the destruction reaches the ears of the Garann Sisters. When put
in correlation with Persson's warning of an impending danger (revealed to him
by the MRT'lag probe), the Federation realizes that something has to be done
to stop this alien force. Unfortunately for those posted at Dyerma, the
resources allocated to curb this menace is not exactly generous.
After a meeting with the Garann sisters and Captain Lecomte, Persson put an
end to his crew's shore leave. He also advises the civilians onboard his ship
to take up accommodations on Dyerma III or IV fro the duration of this new
mission.
Informed of the situation by the XO, June promptly gathers the civilians in
the arboretum, where she explain to them why it's best for them to leave the
DM for the time being. This is a process that proves to be more difficult
than she had anticipated.
The news that the Garann sisters will take an active part in this mission
isn't well received by Gol'Khar. Thankfully, he manages to set his priorities
right and focuses right away on a means to make it possible for the DM to
resist the alien fleet.
During the meeting that follows, a preliminary plans is elaborated where
Dyerma III will provide an empty ship that will serve as a lure against the
enemy.
While the science department is actively working on its projects, Lt MacDuff
discovers that the MRT'lag probe is sending them an impressive amount of
information. The crew is alerted right away and consults the data without
losing any time.
June Craig is pestered by Trok, who wants to take advantage of the situation
to run the Lounge. Already infuriated by a long and painful morning at the
hands of the other civilians, she ejects him and places him inside a
turbolift, ordering him to leave the ship by 20.00.
A second meeting is called to discuss the recent findings about the Zychormca
Fleet as it calls itself. However for Shaldhar Garann only one thing counts:
the obvious power of the MRT'lag probe. It takes all of Captain Persson's
patience to calm her down so that the briefing can continue normally.
Gol'Khar informs the assistance that by incorporating the probe's high energy
field into their shield harmonics, they may have a means to even things up a
little.
Day 2
Sertak takes advantage of the recent quietness in the lounge to visit the
place, late in the evening. There, he meets with ensign Wambui, who shares
his preference for peace and tranquillity.
The crew works actively to find weaknesses among the apparent invincibility
of the Zychormca. Cmdr Vahl was relying on the EMH to find a way to
incapacitate them with a virus, but it seems to be impossible. Health not
being one of the Zychormca's prime concerns, the Doctor has very little
information at his disposal.
Meanwhile, Lt Cmdr Gol'Khar and his scientists seem to have discovered a flaw
in the propulsion system of the Zychormca vessels. Lt Yantz, the Chief
Transporter is called in to assist them in their task.
June decides to brush up on what little combat skills she possesses. Lt Berg
allocates ensign Klein to her training, knowing full well that the two women
are bound to clash. Something that indeed, doesn't fail to happen...
Captain Persson pays a visit to the science lab, which prompts Lt Cmdr
Gol'Khar to ask the permission to use one of their long range shuttles with
the cloaking device coupled to the DM engines. The request is granted, and
Persson receives a data crystal containing the latest searches made by the
science department.
The Captain then goes to engineering. He finds Finh working on a way to cut
the communication systems of the Zychormca, so that orders given by their
leader can no longer be sent.
Trok has reluctantly gone to Dyerma III, where he is moaning on his fate.
However, his mood improves considerably when he meets a businessman who
offers him a deal that he cannot refuse.
The Zychormca Fleet approaches a star system that his inhabited by an
intelligent species. Grratar orders the destruction of the seventh planetoid,
which on its side is deserted. When the people rebel and send their own fleet
of spaceships against the invaders, the Zychormca fight them without mercy.
Thanks to their superior weapons and defence systems, Grratar rapidly gain
the advantage.
Cmdr Vahl is using the holodeck to recreate a Zychormca warrior when the news
of the latest attack reaches her. A new meeting is called, to refocus the
crew's efforts.
A further analysis of Grratar's vessels reveals a new potential fault to
Gol'Khar. It concerns the ship's exhaust venting systems and could allow them
to beam onboard this ship unnoticed. He contacts Vahl to share this
information.
On the Starbase, June says goodbye to Eshan and Kent and comes across Klam,
who tries to persuade her to stay on Dyerma IV. He is rudely interrupted by
Trok, who wants to obtain information on the latest developments regarding
the Zychormca fleet.
On board the Aghavard Vessel, (Zychormca Fleet) a female technician is
pestering silently about her lack of prospects. When she realises that she is
virtually alone on the Bridge with her CO, she takes advantage of this rare
opportunity and kills him. This allows her to become the new Captain and to
take the Aghavard in a new direction.
At long last Admiral Davison gives words that the USS Dark Matter will
receive some help from certain Federation members. The Klingons, Vulcans and
Betazoids are among those who are sending vessels to Dyerma.
Day 3
A plan of action is decided, where an away team consisting of Lt Cmdr
Gol'Khar, Captain Garann and Lt Finh will beam onboard the Zychormca leading
ship, using a fault within its system. Their tasks will be to wreck their
communication network and disable their weapons.
KalMek, a Klingon Captain, is not too impressed by what he hears, and the
specs of the mission have to be re-explained to him, something that the
Garann sisters do to the perfection with their Klingon manners. Late at
night, in the lounge, June is confronted to a young ensign seeking help to
master his fear. Not feeling too bright herself, she invites him for a
drink.
Day 4
Now that all the vessels promised by Davison have arrived, an informal
gathering is given on the USS Okinawa. Despite her dislike for such meetings,
Claryx shows up. While she chats with the XO of this ship, the fleet is
disturbed by the presence of a Denebian trade shuttle that refuses to accept
communications. Once it is ascertained that it doesn't represent a menace for
the fleet, it is allowed to continue its route to Dyerma.
On the holodeck, the three away team members train for their dangerous
mission, in an environment that carefully reproduces what they know of the
main Zychormca vessel.
The stormy relationship between June and ensign Klein reaches such a low
point that the security officer requests a transfer to the Okinawa. Lt Berg
is appalled by the decision and asks June to go and talk to the ensign.
The EMH contacts Captain Persson with an idea of his own: the capture, by the
away team, of a Zychormca crewmember, so that he can start to study this
amazing species. Because of the tight schedule of the AT, Persson lets the
doctor know that the assignment would be better fulfilled by a hologram like
himself.
Five light years ahead of the Federation Fleet, a tradesman named Bradford
Bauer decides to contact the Zychormca, where he would be able to sell them
all sort of information. Unfortunately for him, as soon as they are aware of
his presence they destroy his ship, leaving only debris behind them.
True to her
words, June has a word with Ensign Klein and seemingly resolves the problem
that opposes the two women.
Day 5
The battle against the Zychormca
begins, starting with the sending of a cloaked shuttle transporting Captain
Shaldhar, Lt Cmdr Gol'Khar and Lt Finh. However, one ship within the
Federation Fleet doesn't respond to the latest orders: that of Captain
KalMek. It is soon revealed that he also took a shuttle towards Grratar's
vessel.
While the Dark Matter shuttle flies towards the Zychormca fleet, Lt Finh put
as much distance as he can between himself and the overbearing Klingon woman
who accompanies them.
Responding to a request made by Ambassador Battersby, Lt T'heexa gives June
Craig a 2 hour counselling session.
While he is working on his the comm virus he has created, Lt Finh is attacked
by a Zychormca. As soon as she sees what has happened, Shaldhar kills the
assailant.
When Grratar realises that he is losing his communications network, he
suspects either an intrusion or an internal rebellion. His sends his ops
officer to lower decks to inform Security of the situation.
With no regard for the directives he has received, Klingon Captain KalMek and
fifteen of his men board Grratar's vessel. They are loaded with explosives
and intend to cause as much destruction as they can among the Zychormca.
As Lt Finh continues with his task despite his injury, another Zychormca
interrupts the away team. Gol'Khar and Shaldhar are prompt to eliminate the
menace he represents, but the Zychormca pleads for his life and asks to be
allowed to leave this ship.
On the away team's return to the USS Dark Matter, the Zychormca refugee (An
ops officer named Ghann) is handed over to the Security Department. Lt Berg
asks June to question the alien. Ghann is more than willing to cooperate and
gives the name of all the enemies of Grratar.
Everything was going all right for KalMek's intruders, until a group of
Klingons falls into a trap involving a forcefield. Grratar has a quick look
at them and orders his men to interrogate these aliens.
When Cmdr Vahl senses that some of KalMek's men have been captured and are
being tortured by the Zychormca, Shaldhar tries to convince Captain Persson
to destroy Grratar's ship here and now.
Meanwhile, within the Zychormca fleet, recently self-promoted Captain Esdram
gives a speech to selected crewmembers to entice them to break away from
Grratar's Empire.
.
Despite the fact that Grratar seems to have lost control of his main weapon system, he fires on the USS Dark Matter with renewed focus. Noticing that one of the Zychormca vessels has broken away from its fleet, Lt Cmdr Gol'Khar volunteers to take a shuttle and intercept the aliens.
On board Grratar's ship, upon discovering that several of his men have been captured, Captain KalMek prepares an explosive plan to rescue them. Meanwhile the Klingon captives are tortured by the Zychormca, but, true to their nature, they don't utter a word.
After interviewing Ghann, June relays her doubts about him to Lt Berg. She feels that in his attempt to save his life, the Zychormca would probably betray them at the first opportunity.
Not long after the Solar Winds shuttle has launched, the USS Dark Matter realises that the alien fleet has been joined by even more vessels. When the shuttle finds itself endangered by these new arrivals, Persson tries to use a tractor beam to save the away team, but the shuttle disappears in a massive explosion.
On board the Solar Winds, Captain Garann, Cmdr Vahl, Lt Cmdr Gol'Khar and Lt Sertak slowly regain consciousness. A quick survey of the situation reveals that they are in an area of space that is totally unknown to them. The team suspects that the M'Rtlag probe is responsible for what has happened to them. When the necessary repairs have been performed, they discover that there are no relay stations in the vicinity. There are however several class M planets. The shuttle sets course for the closest one, two light years away.
In sickbay the Finhs have an unpleasant confrontation with Dr Hereward, who refuses to let the ACEO go back to engineering.
While the USS Dark Matter tries to figure out where the Solar Winds has gone, on board Grratar's ship, KalMek manages to rescue his men thanks to the intensive use of explosives. They leave the vessel in a rush, while it seems to be the target of an intensive attack.
Amidst constant clashes with Captain Garann, the away team lands on their selected planet, where they are confronted to a mystery: the forest they are about to explore bears marks that it has been visited recently. They also pick up faint electro-magnetic pulses.
Thanks to new video footage sent by the M'Rtlag probe, the Federation fleet is able to see that KalMek and his men have managed to escape. Grratar's fate on the other hand is less enviable, since his ship has suffered tremendously, not only at the hands of the Klingons, but also because of a frantic attack form the new Zychormca vessels.
When Captain Persson is contacted by Tamyeshi Garann pressing for information about her missing sister, he decides to send June over to the Klingon ship, with the hope that she can mediate the situation. No sooner has this been sorted out that the Captain is contacted by the Zychormca high command, demanding that they don't interfere with their affairs.
After receiving further menaces from the high command, Lars resorts to bluff. He pretends that the M'Rtlag probe within the Zychormca Fleet is actually a powerful weapon. It gets the full attention of his interlocutor, but he still insists that the Federation fleet should leave the sector immediately, or be punished.
After walking seven kilometres, the away team finally reaches the source of the electro-magnetic pulses: A cave that opens into a ransacked laboratory. There, they discover a creature that is half robotic and half biological. Exploring further, they find a holographic wall leading towards another room.
