Mission Four : The Aquanauts

16 June - 22 August 2005

After the return of Blue to his home world, the Dark Matter set course for Deep Space Outpost 316 for a two days' shore leave. Once there, Captain Rhyman (npc) and his men will be one step closer to their journey home.

The first night back onboard the DM, however, is not easy for everyone. Lt (jg) MacDuff has a nightmare which ends up with a foot injury. And Miss Craig has to deal with Bartender Trok (npc) after he tried to access one of her personal messages.

On day 8, just when Counsellor Sulvik was about to start a set of meditation sessions with Ensign Munro (npc), he receives a call from his ex-wife. She informs him that she will be at DSO 316 and wishes to see him.

Meanwhile, to get his revenge on June Craig, Trok calls his uncle Glirb (npc) for a special favour.

In the Sol system, Lt Robert Hadley, Chief of Security, makes his preparations to join the USS Dark Matter.

In a bid to improve his stormy relationship with June Craig, Lt Gol'Khar offers her a data crystal containing holo images of Blue. But it doesn't seem to have the desired effect...

On their arrival at DSO 316, Counsellor Sulvik pays a visit to Lt Robert Hadley, then carries on with the evaluations of the senior staff. It leads him to assist Lt Cmdr Vahl as she investigates a strange transfer order regarding Miss Craig. When it becomes clear that it was master-minded by Trok, the Bar Manager dismisses him once and for all.

In the evening, Lt Sulvik meets up with his ex-wife and her temperamental Klingon husband ; and Lt Julian Orthis makes a shocking discovering during a news broadcast. His wife's Maquis ship has finally been caught by the Federation and the Klingon's forces. When they discover that she has managed to escape, Orthis is pestered by two Judge-Advocates from the Outpost. Orthis is adamant that he doesn't know where his wife could be. But, a few hours later, he goes to a seedy Ferengi bar and sends a discreet message to her.

Lt Hadley, now on board, becomes familiar with his new position. He meets with Captain Lars Persson and Lt Berg (npc), his own Deputy. But things turn a bit awry when he reports to the XO. Vahl's past being deeply affected by the Wolf 359 battle, she is unable to hide her resentment at speaking to a survivor of this tragedy.

On the Outpost, Lt Gol'Khar is confronted by three Klingons who are quick to mock his Science Officer status on board a Federation vessel. It ends up in a fight where everyone is injured. But Gol'Khar refuses to see a doctor before the evening he was enjoying with Lt Cmdr Vahl is over.

Early next morning, the senior staff learns that the Dark Matter will be going to a Class O planet in sector fifteen, one whose population has just applied to enter into the Federation. It will be their task to check whether this pelagic world fits with the UFP requirements.

While the Cyndarians get prepared for their future hosts, Captain Persson decides that two away teams will be needed for this mission :
- Lt Sulvik, Lt Hadley, Ms Craig, Ensign Munro (npc), Ensign Rogers (npc) will accompany him to the Capital City.
- Lt Cmdr Vahl, Lt Gol'Khar, plus Lt Berg (npc) and Ensign Sokolov (npc) will take a tour of Cyndarius' oceans.

With eight days before their arrival, Lt Sulvik continues his evaluations. He meets again with Lt Hadley, who gives him a taste of Japanese mythology, but he has to change his habits for Lt Gol'Khar. Yet this compromise doesn't manage to tame the Klingon's anger.

On deck thirteen, Lt Orthis and his men start working on the Cetacean lifeboat, which needs a serious upgrade in order to be of service during this mission.

Once in orbit around Cyndarius, Captain Persson's delegation is invited to a submarine for a short trip to Oceania. Here, they learn a bit about Cyndarian's ancient history and are offered a breakfast, followed by a guided tour of the city once they reach it. This is an experience not entirely enjoyed by Lt Sulvik, as he finds it difficult to breath the Cyndarian's air.

Lt Orthis, who is now in charge of the Bridge, takes it upon himself to start a ship-wide project that will study the weather patterns of Cyndarius.

At long last, Vahl's team receive the green light to begin its own exploration of the oceans. For their own safety they are however accompanied by a Cyndarian shuttle. While heading southwards, they discover a cave system that extends to the surface.

With Lt Sulvik feeling unwell, Councillor Amarin (npc) advise the DM delegation to take a break before the meetings start. Unfortunately their growing doubts about the situation on Cyndarius are confirmed when Ms Craig is kidnapped.

However, it doesn't take long to Lts Hadley, Sulvik and Ensign Munro (npc) to find a trail, leading them to a factory where huge numbers of androids are assembled.

On alert, Lt Orthis prepares a contingency plan, in case Captain Persson calls for his assistance. Meanwhile, during their exploration of the ocean, Vahl's team keeps clashing with their guide and her reluctance to share information with them.

June Craig is forced to make a statement demanding equal rights for the Cyndarian androids. She is rescued moments later by Lt Sulvik and Ensign Munro (npc) while Lt Hadley is providing a diversion to the vast number of androids that occupy the factory. Something which costs him a serious arm injury.

After a hectic run and the transportation of Craig's kidnapper (npc) to the USS Dark Matter, they finally make it to safety. They are subsequently directed to the Chamber of the Ancients. There, after a long speech by Amarin Col (npc), the hall is secured by an army of androids lead by Kimaron (npc). They insist on taking Councillors Amarin and Taran (npc) with them, so that they can be judged for their crimes. The Federation delegates are invited to take part in the trial.

In a smaller undersea city, Vahl and Gol'Khar find clues that a massacre of androids has occurred in the region not that long ago.

In the afternoon, Lt Orthis greets the ship's new Chief of Ops on board : Lt Keith Anderson.

Shortly after the return of the two away teams to the Dark Matter, Persson holds a briefing. During this, it is decided that civilians will form the jury for Amarin and Taran's trial. And while Engineering and MacDuff try to repair android Irset, Lt Anderson and Doctor Tainer get more familiar with their respective departments.

Later in the evening, Lts Hadley and MacDuff pay a visit to the DM's new ACMO. Lt Sulvik finally manages to speak with Irset. What the android reveals pushes the Captain to cancel his plan of participation in the trial.
Instead, a ploy is used to mimic the arrival of the Jury on Cyndarius. Kimaron falls for it and orders his androids to fire on the new-comers. This action prompts Persson to beam up the android leader, along with Amarin and Taran. The three Cyndarian threats are taken into custody, but in different areas of the ship.

While the prisoners are being interrogated by Lts Hadley, Sulvik and Captain Persson, Lt Cmdr Vahl spends three long hours with Councillor Jashan Tor (npc) and Professor Irset (npc) to secure the first draft of a peace treaty.
At Jashan's request Ms Craig takes him to the holodeck for a salt water dip, an experience that is quickly forgotten when the red alert sounds throughout the ship with bad news : android Kimaron has managed to escape from his cell, with drastic consequences.

Lars Persson has the displeasure to find Kimaron intrude upon his ready room, where the android makes it clear that he intends to hijack the Dark Matter to escape from Cyndarius. Sensing what is happening, Lt Cmdr Vahl orders the science department to consult Irset to find a solution to overpower Kimaron. With some reluctance, Irset reveals how ultrasounds could stop his old friend in his tracks. It take these, along with Lt Hadley's rifles and Lt Gol'Khar's presence to finally put an end to Kimaron's dark scheme.
While Kimaron is being dismantled for the return to his home world, Lt Sulvik and Lt Orthis reflect on the android's actions and motivations.
On Outpost 316, the Dark Matter's new CMO, Dr Jamaica N'we, finds herself entangled in the investigation following the suspicion of links to terrorism.
