ON: Damage Control
Day: 6 - Time: 19.21 - Scene: Engineering
The phaser blast tore through the figure, or rather where the figure had
been. Either they managed to step back in time or they beamed out. Julian
couldn't tell which, but they to have done one or the other as there were
no pieces of body on the deck.
His comm was sounding, but Julian ignored it as he concentrated on
watching the doorway. The scags may have been lucky once. They were not
going to be lucky twice.
Suddenly there was a tap on his shoulder,. It was the duty officer (npc).
Somehow, they had managed to crawl round to his position.
"Yes," he snarled, still maintaining his vigil.
"Message from the bridge, sir. Mister Kurns (npc) reports that the
intruders have broken off." They paused then added as way of explanation.
"Mister Kurns is acting head of security whilst Lieutenant Berg is off the
ship."
Julian stood up. "You, Ms Sands (npc)," he read reading the name badge of
the crew woman with the phaser, "Remain here guarding the door until
security arrive or we get an all clear." He and the duty officer then
returned to the main console. Julian pinched the seat then called up Tony
Steele (npc).
"The intruders appear to be leaving us alone," he said to his number two.
"However, they are still on the ship so don't send out any damage control
parties without an armed escort. Any damage that needs to be attended
to?"
"There was a delay whilst Tony obviously consulted the board. "Only two,"
he replied. "a power linkage to the bridge. a party is on its way
there..."
"Call them back and arrange an escort," Julian ordered. "What's the
other?"
"A breach in the outer hull near Main Engineering has caused a coolant
pump to vacuum weld up. The area is sealed off by emergency bulkheads.
Here are the co-ordinates."
A picture appeared on the scene. Julian looked at it for a moment. "That's
one of the pumps for the port nacelle," he said.
Tony agreed.
"If we lose another pump, there will be serious trouble so we are going to
have to take a look at it what ever the risks. There are some phasers
here. I'll take one and a crew person and we will go and repair the hull
and see if we can clear the pump."
"Yes, sir." If Tony noted that his Chief didn't think that he needed help
from security, he had now learned not to mention such minor points.
"We will keep an open channel with Main Engineering. If you have anything
to report patch them in as well as the bridge. Chief Engineer out."
Minutes later, Julian and Ms Sands were suited up and heading for the
breach. The route was slightly round about as what with intruders on
board, he had no intention of using a crawl way. Half way through the
journey, there was a report from the bridge that the aliens had beamed
off. Julian however was not going to take any chances, they could easily
come back and besides, they could have left booby traps. Hell, he had done
that a couple of times when beaming off Cardassian ships. Star Fleet High
Command didn't approve of such activities. However, it had been standard
practice by the Blue Comet "to give the creeps a little extra" and what
the admirals didn't know about wouldn't hurt them.
So the approach to the damaged area was performed with some stealth.
First, they closed another bulkhead then opened one to give themselves
access to the corridor.
"OK Ms Sands," Julian said after studying the scene, "It seems safe
enough. Take a look at the hole."
Ms Sands, she had exchanged her phaser for a toolbox, walked up to the
hole.
"I have a plate large enough to weld over it," she reported. "There are a
couple of minor holes near it that I will have to cover as well."
Julian did not reply; he was too busy watching the corridors. A few
minutes later, "The holes are covered now, sir. I can now repressurise
this section.
"Go ahead," he said, his eyes still watching the corridor. As the air
flooded in, his faceplate started to mist up a fraction, but he did not
bother to remove his helmet. Instead he covered Sands's approach to the
pump. She had removed not only her helmet but also her gloves in order to
work. Casually he noted that the ship had stood down from Red Alert.
Sands commenced work on the pump by first spraying in a lubricant. A
couple of blow with a wrench followed then she reported success.
"We ought to replace it, sir," she commented "It is running rough and
could easily pack up."
Julian thumbed Tony. "We are going to replace the pump, Tony ," he
reported. "Can you get a couple of guys to bring a new one up here and
help Ms Sands replace it."
"Wilco, sir, Number Two out."
He then started stripping off his suit. "Pass me yours, I'll take both back
to Engineering with me."
"Thank you sir."
With the ship off Red Alert, Julian used a crawlway to facilitate his
progress. After dropping off the suits, he went to his office, sat down at
his desk and commenced a run down of ship's systems starting with the most
critical. Beyond the pump, no reports of serious damage had come in, but
he knew he would not be happy until a check had been done.
Idly, he noted when he reached it on the list that pump was still not
repaired. Obviously it was taking time to move the replacement up. He made
a note for the system to log when the repair was completed then he
continued on.
When he got to the fridge in the Captain's quarters, he decided to call it
a night. It was not particulary important whether or nor Persson was
drinking cold beer. He switched off his terminal then headed back down to
Main Engineering to see how the current shift was doing.
