ON: Rescue Operation
Day 8: Time: 11.10 Scene: Android Factory
+"Yes sir, understood. Hadley out."+ In the darkness of the
passageway, Sulvik could barely make out the Security chief's
features.
"I infer you have our orders from Captain Persson, Lt. Hadley. What
does the Captain wish us to do?"
Hadley adjusted his phaser. "According to Amarin Col (npc), the
Cyndarians' androids have malfunctioned and seem to be displaying
sentient thought. Our first priority is Miss Craig, but the Captain
suspects there's something deeper going on. He wants us to grab an
android on our way out so he can get another point-of-view."
Ensign Munro (npc) looked out into the factory nervously. "Shouldn't
be hard, sir. There's quite a few of them out there."
Sulvik nodded and looked past them at a platform high above their
current level. "Indeed. I believe it would be exceedingly difficult
for us to reach the lift to the platform where we observed Miss
Craig without drawing unwanted attention."
"Leave that to me. You two just worry about getting to Miss Craig."
Sulvik looked at him doubtfully. "I do not think that this is a time
to indulge your self-destructive tendencies..."
Hadley chuckled. "No worries Counsellor. I fully intend on coming
out of this one alive. Hopefully, I can even grab an android on my
way out. Watch me; you'll know when it's time to go."
Hadley ran out onto the assembly line floor, surprisingly fast for
as old as he was. "Hey you stupid hunks you tin! Why don't you pick
on someone who can fight back!!"
In unison, about twenty mechanical bodies shifted towards Hadley and
began moving towards him slowly.
"That is the sign Lt. Hadley told us to watch for. I do not believe
that he could do anything less subtle to distract their attention."
Sulvik's words were proven wrong as Hadley shot a quick burst from
his phaser that turned a piece of machinery into a smoldering pile
of rubble.
Sulvik and Munro took advantage of the confusion to make it to the
platform. As the platform rose higher and higher towards the
uppermost level, they could see the androids begin to work a
rudimentary flanking manuever, forcing Hadley to move closer and
closer into one of the factory's corners.
"Sir, I don't think Lieutenant Hadley can survive without help."
Munro's voice sounded helpless.
"They will not kill him, Ensign. Although these androids' purposes
remain unknown, they must know that logically they will not aid
their cause by murdering a Federation officer."
It seemed like small comfort for Munro, who was watching the
androids slowly close in on Hadley.
The platform came to a halt outside of what could only be the
factory's control room.
"Ensign, have your phaser at the ready." Sulvik tapped the pad on
the wall and the door swung open.
Munro stared, too surprised at this android dressed in bright red
clothing to fire. Sulvik, however, did not seem to be taken aback
and fired a well-aimed shot at the robotic being's head. The shot
glanced off the android and harmlessly into the wall.
"Fascinating." The android did not seem the worse for wear from the
phaser burst; indeed, Sulvik would probably describe him as
irritated if he had to choose a word. Of course, the Vulcan did not
have time to study the android's mental state and it had begun a
slowly grinding approach to Sulvik.
Phaser fire did not seem to work; and Sulvik knew he could not match
the android's strength. Finding a solution to this problem would
take a great deal more time than he currently had.
Of course, the best solution is often the simplest one, as June
Craig proved in this case. Seizing the beaker of herbal tea, she had
not yet drunk, June cracked it over his metallic skull. The android
known as Professor Irset (npc) had time to turn and look at June
with an expression of surprise before it's machinery started to
crackle and sputter as the hot liquid merged with his circuits.
"Thanks for the rescue." She said sardonically. "If you want
something done, I guess you have to do it yourself."
"True words, Miss Craig. I believe in this case the full credit for
your rescue belongs to you. Indeed, perhaps also the rescue of
Ensign Munro and myself, from this creature."
"He said his name is Professor Irset, and he runs this facility."
Sulvik knelt beside the now-lifeless metal husk. "We should take it
with us. If we can reactivate him, he may have much information."
"Reactivate him? Why the hell would you...?"
"Excuse me, sir. What about Lt. Hadley?" Munro was already in the
lift.
"Oh yes! Miss Craig, this is a discussion for another time. I can
only hope we are not too late to prevent serious injury to Lt.
Hadley."
"I thought you said it would be illogical to harm him
unnecessarily?" Munro asked.
Sulvik gestured to the android draped over his shoulder. "These
beings have already displayed illogical behaviour by clothing
themselves. My assesment may have been wrong."
