ON: Shift Change
Day: 1 Time: 1700 Scene: Sickbay
Once they were underway, N'we left Sickbay, and headed to Engineering. She
had an hour before shift change. It was as good a time as any to show
Lieutenant Orthis her plans for Sickbay and her quarters, and see whether
he would be able to make the changes she wanted.
Rather, she tried to leave Sickbay. She was intercepted by Dr Hereward
(npc).
"Well, here I am," he announced.
Jamaica looked at him questioningly.
"Surely you haven't forgotten shift change, Dr. N'we," he said.
Jamaica took a quick look at the nearest chronometer. It was 1700 hours.
She wondered where the time had gone, and headed back into the bay for the
shift change meeting. Her meeting with Lieutenant Orthis would have to
wait.
"We haven't had much unusual, " Nurse Bendrix (npc) announced.
"Everyone patient I've seen who was at the Outpost reports no symptoms
worthy of reporting," Hereward contributed.
"Except for Felicia Havenall (npc)," Mulcahey (npc) added.
Nurse Bendrix raised an eyebrow when she heard the name. Felicia wasn't
that common a name.
"What was unusual about that case?" N'we asked.
"I can't put my finger on it, Doc. She just seemed too reluctant to be
'ere. I mean we've all seen cases of sexually transmitted diseases.
They're
uncomfortable, sure, but we can treat 'em. So, when she made such a big
hullabaloo about it, well, it just seemed off."
"Well, since she was reluctant to see a male practitioner, I'd like you to
follow up with her, Nurse Bendrix.
The nurse nodded.
"Anything else?"
"We still haven't cleared most of the senior staff," chimed in another
nurse.
"Who's left?"
"Well, most of them, Sir. In fact, you're the only one who has been
cleared."
"Moeder van god," N'we said, lapsing for a moment, into her native
Dutch.
The strange looks she got from around the room clued her in that the
Universal Translator hadn't. Another thing to speak with Lieutenant Orthis
about.
"I'll see to that," she said. If necessary, she would go to them, but they
would be checked.
"Anything else?" she asked.
The group responded in the negative. N'we called the meeting to an end.
They were a competent staff.
"Doctor Hereward, may I speak with you for a moment?" Jamaica asked the
EMH.
"Don't tell me. More meetings?" the HoloDoctor groused.
"No. But I do have an assignment for you. Something that should be right
down your line."
Hereward waited.
"I'd like you to give me an assessment of the crew's general level of
basic
medical knowledge. I know that we're expected to be responsible for their
major medical needs. However, if we need to renew or review their basic
medical training, or if there are crew in key areas who don't have basic
medical training, I'd like to know about it so that we can remedy the
situation."
Hereward didn't look particularly pleased with his assignment.
"Would you like me to put together lesson plans too?"
"You can do that?"
Too late, the doctor realized that he'd backed himself into a corner.
"That would be wonderful," Jamaica said, smiling. "Thank you Doctor
Hereward."
The CMO turned and went to her office. She sat down at the terminal. Since
the senior staff hadn't reported for clearance, she had little choice but
to send them invitations.
"You are cordially invited to Sickbay for a full Physical Examination,"
they began.
She sent one to each department head, asking them to please see a member
of
the medical staff that very evening. A full physical would take about an
hour each, and make for a late night if the staff insisted that she do the
honors. She left the bay, after telling the evening crew that she was
going
to the lounge.
