USS Dark Matter - Logs

September 2006 - Post Selection

ON : Impersonation

Date: 9 - Time: 08.50 - Scene: Main Lounge

Abraham (npc) was at the main replicator to order two Valerian root teas when a familiar voice intruded in his matrix.

"My kingdom for an hour of conversation," Hereward (npc) said, sounding as gruff as ever.

Abraham dedicated a subroutine to handle his friend unobtrusively while he carried on with his tasks, leaving the bar as soon as the two mugs were full. "Your kingdom, Dr?" He asked silently.

Hereward sighed. "I was just altering a quote from the Bard. William Shakespeare, a reputed Terran play-write. With all this spare time on my photons, I have done a tremendous amount of reading. So much so that it is already a couple of weeks now that my appetite for words has left the strict domain of medical literature."

"I see," Abraham said as he served his customers.

"You are a lucky program, Abraham. For all her short-comings, at least June Craig activates you from time to time."

"I suppose that it is easier for the crew to use such a lowly program as mine. I am here to serve after all. You on the other hand, have the advantage of a complex matrix..."

"As complex as it is," Hereward interrupted him, "it seems that I am relegated to oblivion every time a CMO joins this ship!"

"May be that this is due to your intricate personality?" Abraham ventured cautiously. "If you were more amenable, this crew would have less hesitation about calling for your expertise."

"Are you are trying to imply that I should be as subservient as... as a worm?" Hereward continued, even more flustered.

A Bajoran customer wanted a Macchiato, forcing the holo-waiter back to the bar. "I am only saying that sentient beings do not like to be menaced and this in any way, Dr."

"Whatever!" The EMH replied impatiently. A short silence followed, allowing Abraham to pay more attention to the lounge, then the voice resumed : "How are things going on this ship, anyway? I haven't been able to access any file related to this current assignment."

"It is not my role to know, Dr."

"My altered quote stands. I would give anything for a bit of life in my matrix."

There was only a slight remote chance that Miss Craig would accept another holo program in her lounge. But if this was to happen, then it would be his turn to be turned off more often than not. Right now, he didn't feel ready for this type of sharing. "Why don't we go to the holodeck when my shift is over?" He proposed. "It's a long time that we haven't taken advantage of this possibility, and I heard that the promenade on Station Dyerma 4 is very exciting, to quote a patron."

"I am speaking of real life interaction, Abraham. Why don't we exchange our roles for an hour or so? I truly need it. Indeed, my sanity depends on it."

Although he recognized the despair in his friend's voice, Abraham still couldn't come to terms with the idea. "I'm not sure you would be able to handle the position, Dr. Fair enough, it is quite a simple one, but you said it yourself, you cannot resort to being servile, which is what my matrix is all about. If Miss Craig was ever to discover that you took my place..."

"She won't. No one will," The EMH quickly countered. "I can be terribly discreet too, you know."

Abraham pouted at the remark, but resumed his usual bland face when he realized that Klam (npc) was observing him. "I am truly not sure about this, Dr."

"I thought you were my friend..."

"I am Dr. But what you propose that we do is very risky. Besides, it's not only Miss Craig, that you would have to watch out for. There is also Klam, and Trok (npc) too. And if you ever upset a customer, it would be the end of holo-waiter Abraham, also known as Abe."

"It would only be for 60 minutes." Hereward insisted. "It's not the rush hour and Craig isn't even here. Nothing untoward will or can happen."

Abraham felt like sighing but changed his mind, in case someone in the lounge was looking at him. "You are not going to leave me alone, aren't you, Dr?"

"Not unless my services are needed in sickbay, which is very unlikely to happen."

"All right then," Abraham agreed, feeling defeated. "One single hour. Do not speak to the patrons unless you are being requested to do so. And even then, remember that quick answers like 'yes' or 'no' are the best options in this lounge. We are not here to entertain nor upset these people, just to serve them. Another thing, you must keep a strict eye on Mister Trok."

"It sounds simple enough!" Hereward said cheerfully. "When do we start?"
