ON : Doing Homework
Stardate: 238202.21 – Time 19.00 – Scene: Starbase Dyerma IV, Holodeck
Ner Augyi stood calf-deep in water, surveying the scene. A few feet ahead
of her, mottled green land rose from the water: Phorgenica's main
continent, on a vastly reduced scale. She turned south, to look at one of
the details that had caught her eye in the data she'd looked up: an
offshore mining operation designed to get at a particularly rich vein of
dilithium under the seabed.
"Computer. Remove seas and increase scale by one thousand. Apply
false color and transparency to show underlying geology." The
computer complied, and the landscape around Augyi began to grow
rapidly. She winced, then closed her eyes to ward off the
disorientation. After a second, she cracked one eyelid to make sure the
simulation had settled down. Augyi looked down at the seabed beneath her
feet. Finding the edge of the bright blue dilithium bed, she walked along
the perimeter. "Computer. Speculation. Reason for dilithium formation
in this environment?"
"Unknown," the feminine voice responded. "Insufficient data."
-Yeah, that's what I figured,- Augyi thought. –Pretty rare to find
dilithium in a sedimentary layer, though. Worth looking at further.-
"Computer. Record simulation data and save to file Augyi-work-
thirteen." The computer beeped to acknowledge the command and again to
signal it had finished. "Include it in my upload batch when the Dark
Matter docks." She looked around and stretched her arms. –So, what now…-
"Computer. Time?"
"It is currently 19.09." Augyi turned to where the holodeck's exit
stood hidden, and gave the command to end the program. The DM was
scheduled to arrive in twenty minutes, just enough time to get to the
station's temporary quarters before her new ship pulled in. She jogged
down the corridor and turned the corner to her room – much of the Starbase
was still empty, and she'd been able to grab an opening on the main deck.
She ducked inside, pulled her dress jacket on over her undershirt, and
headed for the turbolift.
"Berth Eight, reception lounge." The lift hummed and began moving up
through the starbase's levels. Augyi started to wonder if she'd miss the
DM's first arrival, but the turbolift opened directly into the lounge, and
she stepped out just as the hangar's main doors began to slide open. She
looked around the room and saw Captain Lecomte waiting over by the docking
bridge, discussing something with one of his aides, but didn't recognize
anyone else. She walked over to the large bay window as the Dark Matter
slid gracefully between the vast doors.
As the DM pressed up against the bridge, Augyi finally backed away
from the window and headed towards the entry hatch.
