ON: Madness or Influence?
Day: 18, Time: 10:35, Scene: Deck 6
Counsellor Tyvek marched down the corridor with a directed stride. His
meeting with June had gone acceptably, as had Tyvek's introductory session
with one of the new crew, a Lieutenant(jg) Pereira(npc) who would be
joining the staff in the Ops department. Tyvek supposed this was ideal, as
she was one of the few Operations officers on board. Ops was only second
to Flight Control in the department with the lowest number of staff housed
on the Dark Matter, with the balance leaning more in favour of the
sciences and engineers more so than most ships.
His next crew session was scheduled for a few hours from now, when he
would finally have a chance to cross paths with the DM's newest Chief of
Security. In the meantime, Tyvek wanted to speak with Ben Tyning(npc)
before he was due to depart from the ship. Tyvek arrived outside Mr.
Tyning's guest quarters and reached for the door chime. Just before
Tyvek's finger touched it, his commbadge chirped and Commander Vahl's
voice come over the channel.
+Vahl to Tyvek+
"Tyvek here, Commander. What can I do for you, sir?"
+Counsellor, I want you to head to the Starboard docking port and
intercept Jack Ryan before he leaves. Please hurry, I will explain to you
on the way.+
Tyvek had already turned and began jogging back up the corridor by the
time he responded "Aye, aye, Commander."
It seemed Tyvek was going to be getting his first meeting with Mister Ryan
out of the way sooner rather than later today.
+I just spoke with Lieuten--rather, Mr. Ryan in his quarters. He has
packed up and left, quit Starfleet abruptly.+
"Did he say why?" Tyvek inquired with a habitual raise of his eyebrow.
+He says he is urgently needed at Deep Space 316, and that 'destiny
awaits him'. He appears to be in a frenzied state.+
"Frenzied? As in frightened or in a rush to get somewhere?"
+You're the Counsellor, not me. See if you can pull anything out of
him.+
"Aye, sir." Tyvek said as he reached the turbolift.
+One more thing, Counsellor. Ryan seemed to be looking at something
that wasn't there. Seeing something that I couldn't see. He kept
staring through me. Not blankly, but like his focus was behind me. He may
be hallucinating.+
"Understood. I think sickbay had best be informed, if his mental state is
causing him to behave irrationally. Also I think security should meet me
at the docking bay. If he is as intent on leaving as your observations
would suggest, he may not co-operate so willingly."
==Minutes later, Deck 13, Starboard docking bay==
Jack Ryan(npc) Needed to get off the ship. Now. Part of him hated to
leave his career and dreams behind, but this was too big to pass up. He
barrelled around the corner and had to screech to a halt to avoid running
smack dab into Lieutenants Tyvek and Max Berg(npc) as the were approaching
from the other direction.
"Mister Ryan, what is this we hear about you quitting Starfleet with no
previous indicators, then hurriedly leaving to pursue your 'destiny' on a
far away Outpost?" Tyvek asked with a concerned look. Beside him Lt. Berg
stood rather defensively, with his hand on his phaser in its holster,
ready just in case. It was a logical reaction to the situation, since Berg
was a security officer, and they could not predict how Jack would take
this interruption.
"I need to go as soon as possible. Please." He really emphasized the
'please'. He really felt he had to leave urgently.
"Jack, something seems wrong, what's gotten into you?" Max inquired,
"Why are you so intent on leaving this suddenly?"
"Look, it's a little complicated, but I am fine, but I want to go. I'll be
fine, really." His eyes met only with each of them for a second, before
they fixated on a spot behind Tyvek and Max. Max glanced behind them to
see what Jack was looking at. Tyvek kept his eyes firmly on Mr. Ryan, in
case this was an attempt at a diversion. Max's lack of reaction suggested
that he had seen no one or nothing unusual in the direction Jack was
looking.
"What are you looking at? Is it playing a factor in your desire to get off
this ship?" Tyvek asked directly.
"Well, it's complicated. I... well..." Jack laughed nervously, "You'd
think I was crazy."
"Jack," Tyvek began calmly, "This type of behaviour isn't becoming to you.
We are merely concerned. Please tell us, so that we can understand. If
there is nothing wrong, then we can let you get underway. And if there is
something troubling you, then perhaps we could work towards using three
minds instead of just one." Truthfully, Tyvek didn't really know whether
erratic behaviour of this particular nature was typical for Jack Ryan or
not; He was simply trying to create a positive rapport with Jack to get
him to open up. His psychological records showed no evidence of prior
mania or hallucinations, though he was prone to some irrational
behaviours- refusing needed medical treatment and using risky methods when
safer ones would suffice included.
"Please help us to understand." Tyvek stated again.
"Well, its..." Jack took a big breath before revaluing to them, "..the Q."
"The Q?" Berg repeated, taken aback. "Where?"
"He is currently standing just behind and to your left. He made himself
visible and audible only to me. He says that he is interested in seeing
how non-bridge officers...how us 'other guys' deal with different
situations. He is observing me." Jack explained.
"Only appearing to one man; Starfleet records indicate the Q do not
tend to behave in this fashion, Mr. Ryan." Tyvek noted.
"Well, I don't know, he's playing games I guess. He..." Jack stopped
and looked frantically around. He could not seem to find Q anywhere
now. "I'm sure he's having a good laugh about this. You thinking I've gone
mad."
"Why is he making you leave Starfleet?" Max piped up.
"He's not making me do anything. I'm doing the responsible thing by
leaving Starfleet, because I would otherwise be AWOL. I wont have the time
to fulfil my duties. He's made me an offer far too tempting to refuse. He
wants to see how I react in different circumstances, so he's giving me the
chance to experience, well, *everything*. He's going to take be everywhere
in the universe, and any point in time. I'll be able to experience things
that the Federation would dye to know about." Jacks face lit up with a
childish sense of wonder.
"Can you trust him, Jack?" Tyvek noted, going along with Lt. Ryan's
story to get him to open up more as his train of thought progressed.
"With all due respect, I'm a big boy, I can handle myself. Now if I may
please go now..." he brushed past them towards the docking hatch.
"Jack, please think of this from our perspective. Your explanation, as you
readily admit, sounds somewhat hard to grasp. If you wish us to try and
accept your perception, then I ask that you try and see things from ours
as well. It is a possibility you may also be simply suffering from a
temporary delusional state. Please accompany us to sickbay, where we can
have Doctor scan your neural patterns to see if you are having some sort
of episode. If not, you will be free to go. Agreed?" Tyvek reasoned with
him using straight logic.
Behind him, Lt. Berg had stepped around the corner and contacted
Captain Persson to inform him of this situation, as well as asking
permission to escort Jack to sickbay even though it would be a
violation of his personal rights. His mind could be either being
affected by a hostile alien or a mental condition and they owed it to Jack
to help him if his wasn't capable of making a rational decision due to
outside influences. The Captain agreed.
As Tyvek continued negotiating Jack to go to sickbay, but the
ex-Security-Chief wasn't having any of it.
"Mister Ryan, the fact that you are even willing to hear us out for the
sake of your health is evidence of an unstable mental condition, I am
afraid I must insist." Tyvek stepped towards Jack, who turned and bolted
for the door.
Max stepped back around the corner. "Computer seal the docking hatch,
security authorization Berg-Beta-Charlie-Seven-Nine!"
"You can't do this! This is MY life!" Jack turned and snapped at them.
"Computer, unlock the starboard docking hatch, security authorization
Ryan-Alpha-Kappa-Three-Eight!" Jack's resignation had not yet been
accepted, so the Computer still recognized him as the ship's Chief of
Security!
Tyvek reached for Jack for a Vulcan nerve pinch, but the reflexes of
the highly trained Chief of Security were to much, and he grabbed
Tyvek's wrist and whipped him hard to the floor. Too bad Tyvek had not
purchased the new training program yet.
Jack then turned around and disarmed Max, who was drawing his phaser, with
a back roundhouse kick. The two security specialists grappled as Tyvek
recovered and hopped back his feet. With Lt. Berg restraining Jack, Tyvek
managed to put him asleep with a nerve pinch. Jack went limp into Max's
arms.
"Tyvek to Persson, Lieutenant Ryan is unconscious. We are taking him to
sickbay."
+Understood, keep me advised. Persson out.+
Tyvek and Max, just shared a concerned glare as they began carrying
Jack up the corridor.
