USS Dark Matter - Logs

January 2006 - Post Selection (2)

ON: Ch-ch-ch-changes...

Day: 4 Time: 1000 - Scene: USS Dark Matter, Deck 8, Counselling Suite

Abby stood in the middle of her office and looked at the PADD in her hand. She nodded as she read through the list. She thought she had all the changes down, at least the most obvious ones. No doubt she would come across some others at a later date as she settled in, but these were the ones she wanted done now. Vulcan austerity was all very well but it wasn't to Abby's taste.

The doorchime on her office door sounded and she called out to whoever it was to enter. A young-looking red-haired NCO in gold entered.

"Good morning, Lieutenant. I'm Morag McRath(npc) , assigned to OPS and specifically the Quartermaster's department at the moment. You wanted to see someone about making some changes to the furnishings here?"

Abby nodded. "Yes, I've made a list. It's rather extensive, I'm afraid!" She handed the PADD to McRath with an apologetic smile.

The two women sat down whilst Morag cast an expert eye over the list.

"I see what you mean!" she said, looking up from the list at last. Her glance swept around the room. "And I can see why you'd be wanting to make all those changes," she added frankly, a distinct Scots burr audible in her voice as she spoke. "It's a wee bit... Spartan in here, isn't it?"

"It most certainly is!" Abby agreed. "Will it be possible to make all these changes before we leave the Outpost?" she asked hopefully.

"Och yes, nae problem there! We've got a lot of this in storage still from when the last Consellor had a clearout and what we don't have I'm sure we can easily get for you from the outpost. I know a couple of the guys there quite well, and we've got what you might call a good working relationship. Now how about the general decor? Any changes you'd like to make there? I can get a good deal on some wall colours and carpets if you're interested?"

They spent the next ten minutes discussing colour themes and practicalities, and finally came to an agreement. There was nothing too drastic, but enough to change the ambiance of the counselling suite to something Abby felt more comfortable not only for her but also for anyone she was counselling.

"How're you settling in, if you don't mind my asking?" Morag enquired as she made some final notes on the PADD.

"Well, it's early days yet, but I think I'm going to like it here," Abby replied. "I guess it'll take a while to get to know everyone, but so far most people seem quite friendly."

"Och, they're not a bad bunch, considering. I take it you'll no' have met them all yet? All the bigwigs, I mean," she added then blushed. "That is, all the senior officers!" she added hastily.

Abby grinned, appreciating Morag's candour and openness.

"Not all of them, no. I've met Dr N'we, of course, and Lt Commander Vahl. Also Lt Vaelx. Oh, and Lieutenant Hadley and his daughter for about 5 minutes," she added as an afterthought. "Though I can hardly count them, it was for so short a time."

"His daughter?" Morag's eyes opened a little wider in surprise. "No, that'd be his god-daughter. Just arrived last night," she added in explanation, having seen the quartermaster's routine notification. "Rather a surprise for him, I expect. Not to mention Lt Vaelx," she added with a wink. "You'll not be knowing this, of course, but word has it she's a bit sweet on him. Not that I listen to gossip, mind you," she added virtuously if completely untruthfully. "And he's got a wee bit of a soft spot for her, by all accounts. And the XO and the CSciO are an item too, at least, not too, because Lt Hadley and Lt Vaelx aren't exactly an item YET, but you know what I mean?"

Abby did. She also thought that perhaps she shouldn't be encouraging Morag to gossip to her, but on the other hand Morag didn't seem to need any encouragement.

"You'll not have met the Captain yet then?" Abby's informant continued almost without drawing breath. "No, he'll have been away to the Outpost I expect," she answered her own question without waiting to hear from Abby." Probably going to call on Captain Samai," she added knowledgeably. "Which reminds me, did you know there's another new officer? A new ACSciO, now what was his name? Prat something, Bellephone or something like that."

Abby raised her eyebrows. "Prat?" she repeated. "What an, uhh, unusual first name."

"Och, his name's not the least of it, from what I heard," Morag said cheerfully. "But I'd better get going," she added with obvious reluctance, and stood up. "Else you'll no' be getting all your bits and pieces sorted any time soon! OH! I nearly forgot! A good friend of yours told me you were coming and that you liked a wee game of poker from time to time? And he said I was to introduce you to the card school on board.Twiz'd kill me when he gets back if I forgot! So any time you fancy a game, head along to the Mess Hall between 1900 and 2100. We usually have a table or two going."

With a cheerful smile, she headed for the door. "Oh, and if I'm no' there, just tell them Morag sent you, OK? " She gave a wink, and left.

Abby sat still for a moment, almost stunned by the whirlwind that had been Morag. Then a broad smile spread across her face which rapidly developed into a chuckle.
