Manifold Visitor Centre

The Manifold Valley Visitor Centre is situated in the old booking office at Hulme End, terminus of the Leek & Manifold Light Railway. This narrow guage railway opened in 1904 where it followed the contours of the rivers Hamps and Manifold after commencing at Waterhouses to the south.

For just over eight miles, and running through some of the Peak District National Park's most beautiful scenery, this light railway served a number of small, but attractive farming communities, having stations that began at Waterhouses, then it followed the River Hamps at Sparrowlee and Beeston Tor, thereafter it joined the River Manifold near Grindon, and so on to Thor's Cave, Wetton Mill, Butterton, Ecton and finally, Hulme End. The L&MLVR finally closed in 1934.

Back of Ecton (Staffordshire) - 18th Century Copper Mines
Back of Ecton (Staffordshire) - 18th Century Copper Mines

This is the first view of Back of Ecton, the hill that was once mined for its rich copper deposits, the visitor sees on entering Hulme end station visitor centre. As far as Peak District mining is concerned, Ecton was a hive of industry during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

The copper ore was discovered in vertical pipes, due to the enormous upfolding of the limestone in which it existed. This natural folding in the rocks can be examined at the roadside near Apes Tor. Further industry at Ecton itself included Cheese that was made at a dairy built between the road and the railway. The Creamery utilized the services of the light railway which took its cheeses to Waterhouses and beyond.

This view of the trail seen here on the extreme right of the picture, is typical of the scenery that walkers, cyclists and horse riders will encounter through the Manifold Valley. The trail also gives access to the villages that surround it via a series of public footpaths.
