The main part of the town stands on a little headland, the atalaye, with a rocky reef, the virgin's rock, leading out to the sea. This spur is flanked on either side by 2 surfing beaches : the grande plage and the plage des basques, with smaller beaches tucked between the rocks. The great rollers sweep in here from the Atlantic and give Biarritz a reputation as the best surfing centre in Europe. |
