La Pierre St Martin is a modern ski resort, high up on the frontier. There is snow all year round on the tops. Each year, on July 13th the farmers of Arette meet with their neighbours from the Spanish side, up on the Col, and exchange tokens of friendship, to confirm their rights to common grazing, which date back to the 14th century. Their pacts is re-worn every year with a handshake across the "Mont-Joie", or pile of stones which mark the frontier at the col. This area is also reputed for its great caverns. |
