Pau is the Capital of the Béarn, and city of Henri IV. The Castle's room are furnished with Gobelin tapestries, paintings, armour and furniture, all cared for. It was a medieval fortress, the main tower, in brick, was built by Gaston Phoebus. The original Castle was much altered and enlarged by Henry's father about 1530, and is now a Renaissance château on almost classic lines, which also contains the musée du Béarnais. Beyond the walls of Pau lies the vineyard of Jurançon. These vineyard are at over 300 metres and often covered with snow in winter. |
