The history of the peoples of Britain go back a very long way, and indeed, this is particularly evident from the number of our cherished ancient monuments that can be found all over the British countryside. Of all these, Stonehenge invokes our mysterious past like no other.

It draws visitors like a magnet, but alas, holds them at arms length, as if in a tantalising way, under the protection of English Heritage, who want to prevent the grand circle from being damaged, under the weight of so many who wish to see and touch these magnificent stones.

However, these islands have many particularly thought provoking ancient monuments. Among those we have provided links to, are - Avebury Stone Circle, of which the village of that name, lies at its heart. The Nine Ladies, deep in the hills of Derbyshire and surrounded by beautiful moorland. The Rollright Stones set in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds and linked to tales of Witches and Knights.
