The British castle forms a valuable part of our colourful and historic heritage, one that shows us the true nature of civilisation as it was in the darker more violent years of Britain's past.

These were the homes and fortifications of Kings and Dukes, along with wealthy feudal Barons and Earls.

The oldest of our remaining English castles is at Richmond in Yorkshire, built during 1071 by Alan Rufus.

At this time, William the conqueror bestowed the title of "Earl of Richmond" upon Alan, thereby making him Lord of all the lands surrounding his castle.

With so much interest in the way we once lived, many castles now have special reenactment displays for our entertainment.

These provide an exciting opportunity to watch tournaments with Knights in combat, Jousting for the honour of their family name and favour of the crown.
