The heads of most of the great clans of Scotland, lived in grand fortified houses, or castles. Scottish history tells us of great battles, not only between the clans, but also with Viking raiders, the English from across the border, and the Irish. Turbulent times meant that the only real protection, in a land of hills, mountains, deep lochs and broad glens, from your enemies, was to build strong fortified houses and castles in inaccessible places that could be easily defended.
