Parks and Gardens are an integral part of the British, and their way of life. Whether they are the humble gardens of suburbia, or, those grand Gardens designed and laid out by Capability Brown, they each have their own magical essence, places that are a haven of peace and tranquillity, somewhere to relax in, far away from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Today, many of our magnificent private parks and gardens, those laid out centuries ago, are now open for the public to enjoy. This provides a golden opportunity to examine special features such as, Topiary (the close clipping of box and yew hedging into shapes), formal lake, rock and alpine gardens, herb and botanical gardens. A modern favourite, is the cottage garden, with its array of colourful plants that are seemingly growing at random here and there, without any formal layout to their design. Some of our ancient parklands, are places where we can see the wild deer roaming in large herds. Most parks do have a variety of wildlife in and around them. There are also those parks which have modern attractions, such as safari parks and zoos. However, these are not part of the true British heritage that represents our traditional and most beautiful parks and gardens. But, like them or loath them, they are here to stay...for now, anyway.
