For decades now, many of our finest Stately homes, Manors and Country houses, have opened their doors to visitors. They present the finest opportunity, for us to explore and discover how some of our ancestors lived in these sumptuous surroundings, and at the same time, help the owners to keep the premises in good order, for future generations of visitors. Some of these houses have far more to offer, than the grand family portraits, plush libraries and gleaming silverware. Indeed, many are reputed to be haunted too. Very few, hesitate to talk about the headless horseman, who roams the driveway at the dead of night, or the lady in grey who haunts the stairs, gliding through walls without a sound. All of this, is an important part of the history of our grand houses and the people who either, live in them now, or, had ancestors who once occupied these palatial premises in the past. Some houses have both house and gardens open to public view. Where possible, we have tried to show the entrance fee for admission to these houses where they are required. Houses owned by the National Trust and by English Heritage, can be visited either free, or at a lower rate, if you join their membership. Information regarding this, can be had from their respective web sites. Scotland Wales Home Page Add Your URL Traveller's Britain List |
